The third day of Nobel week is behind us and the announcement of awards in the field of chemistry is behind us. The committee awarded three people. As a result of the morning information leak, the winners learned about the award before the official announcement of the verdict.
According to the schedule, the Nobel Prize winners are announced every day at the same time – 11:45 CET. Today, however, the announcement came out earlier. Although the Nobel committee assured that the leak of information was a mistake, the news quickly spread around the world. What’s more, it ultimately turned out to be true. Exactly the same names were given in the official announcement. The Chemistry Prize for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots was awarded to Moungi G. Bawendi of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Louis E. Brus of Columbia University and Alexei I. Ekimov of Nanocrystals Technology.
The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry rewards the discovery and development of quantum dots, which are nanoparticles so small that their size determines their properties. These smallest pieces of nanotechnology now spread light from TVs and LED lamps and can, among other things, help surgeons remove cancerous tissue.
