Absolutely no one who loves football thinks the idea of the Superliga is good. The idea was to gather the world’s best teams, in a “pay to play” concept where the door was closed to all other clubs than the very biggest. Something that makes it exciting to follow a club is the possibility of something big. Just look at how the whole of Norway exploded with joy when Bodø/Glimt advanced in the Champions League a few weeks ago.
In 2021, it was ready for the European Super League. The bosses at Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus were the driving force behind the establishment of a separate league with invited clubs across national borders. Like a closed Champions League, where invited clubs were left with the largest part of the income. Several big clubs in the Premier League jumped at the opportunity, before all of them just as quickly withdrew after massive opposition from their supporters. Real Madrid and Barcelona refused to give up on the project, but five years later, the plan is finally being put in the dustbin.

The project that would center power with the already richest clubs is now fortunately dead. – Over the weekend, it was announced that Barcelona had withdrawn from the project and today, after Real Madrid’s meeting with UEFA, Real Madrid was also involved.
In a press release from both Real Madrid and UEFA, they state that they have reached an agreement, which aims to ensure the future of European football. With Wednesday’s agreement, the project around the European Super League has definitely been put aside.
The controversial project Superligaen is now just a memory:
“After months of discussions, for the good of European football, we have reached a consensus in principle for the well-being of European club football, respecting sporting merit and focusing on the long-term sustainability of clubs, as well as elevating the fan experience through the use of technology”
It was in the spring of 2021 that twelve clubs announced their plans to break away from Uefa and form their own European Super League. Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez was at the forefront of the process.
