The transfer came after a difficult start to the season for the London club, who had to endure relegation from the Premier League. Just five days later, the 21-year-old responded to the charge – with his first goal in the Championship. The club had followed Austbø over time, and already after 13 minutes on the pitch, the supporters confirmed that they had seen correctly: Austbø is our guy. He left the title race and Champions League games for the English second division, but now a potentially great football adventure awaits in the British Isles.

West Ham fans had seen the 21-year-old’s goal for Viking in the Champions League play-off against Dinamo Zagreb, but it was of course something completely different to see Austbø in action with the Hammers shirt – storming forward in attack, positioning himself perfectly inside the five-yard box and broadside in his first goal for the club. The goal came in the 87th minute and increased the lead to 2-0 – a goal that effectively decided the game (which ended 3-0).
In the days after his perfect debut – where he also recorded an assist – the Norwegian was hailed as a “super-sub” in several English media. Into the 77th minute, scoring in the 87th minute. And this just one week after he landed in London!
