On Saturday, Alexander Sørloth was finally in place in the starting eleven. Result: The Norwegian scored both of Atletico’s goals in the space of 26 minutes, in what ended with a 2-0 win over Real Oviedo. On Tuesday, the 30-year-old was on the pitch again, this time against PSV in the Champions League. Result: Player of the Match.
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone is considered to be one of the best coaches in the world. Last season, Sørloth delivered goals in a row for Simeone, this season the Norwegian international striker has strangely enough been relegated to the bench in far too many games. Newcastle is one of the clubs that are ready to take advantage of this opportunity to sign Sørloth, but now Simeone is also reminded of what he has in his Norwegian Viking.
PSV were brimming with confidence after the 4-1 win at Anfield against Liverpool, and started with an early goal against Atletico. Then Atletico put in the turbo – led by Alexander Sørloth.
With both a goal and an assist in what ended with a 2-3 win for Atletico, “our man” was involved in most things offensively and was the obvious choice for the title of Player of the Match.
“He served an assist, scored a goal, and won every single duel both in the air and along the ground. He was very important tonight, was the reason from UEFA for awarding Sørloth as the best on the pitch.
Diego Simeone did not hold back on the superlatives this time:
“This was Alexander Sørloth’s most complete game. He worked, served, helped us play out from behind, pressured the defenders and ran the way he should. I loved it, a fantastic performance,” the Atletico coach said after the game.
Sørloth rules! Diego Simeone has now received proof that Atletico Madrid need their Norwegian Viking on the pitch.
