Acclaimed filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen are preparing to reunite for a new film project – their first collaboration in eight years.
The Oscar-winning brothers most recently worked together on the 2018 Western anthology The Ballad of Buster Scruggs , which received multiple Oscar nominations. Since then, both filmmakers have gone their separate ways creatively, leaving many fans wondering if the legendary partnership was over.

Those doubts have now been thoroughly dismissed.
During a press conference before a ceremony in Lyon, where they will receive the prestigious Lumière Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Coen brothers confirmed that they plan to make a new film together in the near future.
Joel Coen joked about the timing of the reunion, noting that they’d rather not wait too long.
“We are getting old. It should preferably be in the near future,” he said.
Although the brothers would not divulge details about the project, they explained that they have a large collection of unfinished ideas and scripts to choose from. Some concepts have already been written, while others have been on the drawing board for years.
Joel also dismissed rumors that the brothers had parted ways due to creative disagreements or a breakup. According to him, there has never been a major split, and the decision to work independently was simply a natural phase in their careers.
Although the duo kept their cards close to their chests about the story they will eventually bring to the screen, they still gave some hints. Fans shouldn’t expect a fantasy film – a genre both directors admit has never interested them much.
Ethan Coen pointed out that modern blockbuster cinema is increasingly dominated by fantasy, superhero stories, science fiction and horror films. However, he emphasized that these genres do not correspond to the kind of stories that have traditionally inspired the Coen brothers.
The brothers also ruled out making a TV series. Joel explained that long-form television requires a narrative structure that differs significantly from the way they approach filmmaking.
In the years apart, both directors were busy. Ethan directed the documentary Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind and the comedy films Drive-Away Dolls and Honey Don’t!, which he co-wrote with his wife, Tricia Cooke.
Joel, on the other hand, directed the critically acclaimed film adaptation of The Tragedy of Macbeth and is preparing for the release of his upcoming film Jack of Spades, starring Josh O’Connor, Frances McDormand, Lesley Manville and Damian Lewis.
The Coen brothers’ return is likely to be celebrated throughout the film industry. They are behind classics such as Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men and True Grit, and have built one of the most influential careers in modern cinema.
Now, after nearly a decade apart, one of Hollywood’s most iconic filmmaker partnerships is ready to work together again.
