Ronaldo left Portugal’s national team camp on Wednesday (30 September) after coach Jorge Jesus decided not to use him in the 2-1 win over Norway.
A settlement meeting was later held between Ronaldo and Jesus, as well as the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença, before the 41-year-old confirmed his resignation on social media.
Luka Modric wants Cristiano Ronaldo to have a dignified farewell to Portugal
In the statement he posted online last week, Ronaldo said he would account for the “reasons” that motivated him to leave the training camp.
On Tuesday (October 6), the Al Nassr striker then released a lengthy statement in which he explained how Jesus broke his trust on several occasions.
The main problem was that the coach told him that he did not want to be part of the squad that traveled to Norway and Denmark. Ronaldo rejected that position because it “would not set a good example” for his teammates.
The former Real Madrid superstar said he was also asked to consider retiring from national team football, and that he wanted “one or more farewell matches” before making an apology to “the Portuguese people”.
For leaving the camp without permission, Ronaldo faces a potential ban of between one and six months. But his former Los Blancos teammate, Luka Modric, wants him to return and get a dignified farewell to the national team.
Modric, who shared the pitch with Ronaldo on 222 occasions at the Santiago Bernabéu, gave his verdict after a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Nations League on Tuesday night.
“No, no, I haven’t spoken to him. It’s hard for me to say anything, because I don’t know exactly what happened. I haven’t followed the situation very closely, because I have my own problems here,” said the 41-year-old.
“It’s sad to see this happen to him in his own country. I don’t know exactly what happened, but I hope the situation resolves. Because Cristiano is the greatest player in Portugal’s history, and he deserves a different farewell and a different ending with the national team.
“Still, I think they will find a solution, because Cris deserves – whether he retires or decides not to continue with the national team – a great farewell that reflects what he deserves,” he added.
