The constant attacks on truth and democracy make “Animal Farm” all too relevant in today’s society.

George Orwell’s book is both a recipe for how a totalitarian society was created and, more importantly, what signs tell you are going in the wrong direction. A famous quote is, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more alike than others.”

“Animal Farm” is considered one of the most significant works of fiction of the last 100 years, and perhaps deserves more readers now than ever. But for those who are not fond of reading, there is good news: George Orwell’s short story will now be made into an animated film – with Andy Serkis (“The Lord of the Rings”, “Planet of the Apes”) as director and producer.

Star team of voice actors

According to Variety, the film has assembled an impressive voice cast for the rebellious farm animals:

  • Seth Rogen (“The Super Mario Bros. Movie”) as Napoleon (The Lead Pig)
  • Glenn Close (“Fatal Attraction”)
  • Steve Buscemi (“Fargo”)
  • Woody Harrelson (“True Detective”)
  • Laverne Cox (“Orange Is the New Black”)
  • Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”)
  • Gaten Matarazzo (“Stranger Things”)
  • Kieran Culkin (Oscar winner for “A Real Pain”)

Serkis, who himself has a background in groundbreaking motion capture roles such as Gollum and Caesar, will also contribute as a voice actor.

A dark but important story

“Animal Farm” follows a group of farm animals who rebel against the farmer and establish a society based on equality – before power gradually corrupts the ideals. The story explores oppression, propaganda and the transience of power, and is as relevant today as it was when it was written in 1945.

Premiere in July

The film, which will be the third film adaptation, will premiere on July 11 this year.

Should you read the book first? Absolute. But now everyone gets a second chance to experience this timeless allegory – in a more accessible way.
