FIFA’s latest World Cup ticket prices have come to light through open sale

The Football Supporters’ Association has described FIFA’s pricing as “absurd” after tickets for the World Cup final were made available for a top price of over $10,000 via open sale.

The 2026 World Cup final will take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19. The stadium has a capacity of 82,500, making it one of the largest football stadiums in the United States.

On Wednesday, FIFA reopened ticket sales for the final. Users who attempted to purchase tickets experienced a number of error messages and problems with the purchase process.

According to BBC Sports’ Dale Johnson, who lined up in the virtual queue for tickets only to encounter an error message, FIFA 10 charged $990 for the most expensive ticket available. This is believed to be the most expensive general admission tickets to a football match ever.

ESPN notes that Category 2 tickets were priced up to a maximum of $7,380, and Category 3 tickets up to a maximum of $5,785.

Reacting to the ticket prices, one fan wrote, “The whole experience [of buying tickets] was a disaster. Stood in line for 9.5 hours only to be priced out of the remaining games. The prices are a complete disgrace.”

Another said: “This should be a celebratory event, but it’s just greed.”

A third exclaimed: “What the hell, what a shame.”

In a statement after the announcement of ticket prices, the Football Supporters’ Association told SPORTbible: “This is the most expensive World Cup in history for travelling supporters, from match tickets to travel and accommodation.”

“It’s not just a problem for English supporters, but for supporters all over the planet.”

“FIFA’s absurd ticket pricing and unclear guidelines have led many supporters to conclude that they simply cannot afford to attend football’s biggest global event.”

What has FIFA said about ticket prices?

In an interview with the American channel CNBC in March, FIFA President Gianni Infantino spoke about the dynamic pricing system that is in place “in particular” in the United States, which will cause previously fixed prices to increase or decrease.

“In four weeks, we have requests for a thousand years of World Cups,” he said.

“We have received ticket requests from over 200 countries around the world. Everyone wants to be part of something special.”

“Prices have been set, but especially in the US, there’s something called dynamic pricing, which means the price will go up or down.”

“It’s part of the market we’re in. The prices for some matches will go up. It’s not a problem in the sense that the demand is there… The price is a consequence of that.”

Personally, I will never buy anything through dynamic pricing!! – No matter how much money I have.
