A surprising detail about Manchester City striker Erling Haaland’s contract has been revealed after the club was found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges related to breaching the Premier League’s financial rules.

On Friday (25 September), The Athletic first reported that City had been found guilty of all but one charge levelled against them by the Premier League.
The sanctions are yet to be decided, and City are set to appeal the verdict – although a hefty fine, points deduction, deprivation of titles, and even relegation are still possible.
If City were relegated, most of the players would probably be sold or demand to leave the club. However, according to Spanish media outlet SPORT, star player Haaland has no release clause in his contract if City are relegated.
The Norwegian international signed a solid nine-and-a-half-year contract until 2034 in January 2025. The deal is said to be worth £260 million, equivalent to a base salary of £500,000 a week.

The charges, which relate to a period between 2009 and 2018 when City won three Premier League titles, were first brought against City in 2023.
A hearing took place before an independent commission in 2023 following a four-year investigation, which began after the German newspaper Der Spiegel published leaked financial documents from City in November 2018.
Several Premier League teams are reportedly seeking legal advice and may take legal action for damages.
Man City issues statement on verdict on 115 charges
After the verdict was handed down on Friday, City released the following statement:
“The Premier League process is still ongoing, with significant elements that need to be completed, and is subject to strict confidentiality.
“Thus, Manchester City FC’s position remains in line with the club’s statement from February 2023.
“For eight years, the club has respected the rule of law on the basis that the Premier League’s board and management shall act as an independent, impartial and fair regulator, free from partisan influence.”
Since the charges were brought against them in 2023, the Manchester-based club have vehemently denied any wrongdoing, claiming that they have a “body of irrefutable evidence” that has been presented as part of their defence.

Here is a full breakdown of the accusations against City from the Premier League:
- Failure to provide accurate financial information that gives a true and fair picture of the club’s financial situation from 2009/10 through 2017/18 – 54 alleged violations
- Failure to cooperate with and assist in the Premier League’s investigation from December 2018 to February 2023 – 35 alleged violations
- Failure to provide full details of managerial salary from 2009/10 to 2012/13 and player remuneration from 2010/11 to 2015/16 – 14 alleged breaches
- Violation of the Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules from 2015/16 through 2017/18 – seven alleged violations
- Failure to comply with UEFA rules, including club licences and Financial Fair Play rules, from 2013/14 through 2017/18 – five alleged breaches
