Ange Postecoglou led Tottenham to the historic 2024/25 Europa League trophy, finally the title drought was over. It would still have cost. the Australian coach had cynically downgraded the Premier League, the result being a horribly weak 17th place in the table. In the summer, Postecoglou was replaced by Thomas Frank, the coach who had led tiny Brentford up to the top division – and established himself in the top half of the table. With Frank as Spurs coach, however, there has not been a success story – yet. Now steps are being taken to lift the club.
Things have to be turned around quickly and every single game is important. – Stay tuned and make the world a little more exciting with sports betting, bet on your favorite sport, whether it’s football, hockey, or volleyball, or simply stick to your favorite team.
Tottenham players and Frank have for several months been met with booing from their own supporters. While the coach takes it with stoic calm and keeps his focus on the next training and the next game, the players have ended up in loud discussions with supporters, captain Cristian Romero has gone out on social media and complained about the club management, while the Tottenham Supporter Trust has posted a letter addressed to the club owners with strong criticism of the development at the club.
Postecoglou gave Tottenham a trophy, but felt that the expectations of fighting at the top of the Premier League were so strong, that continuing as Spurs manager was almost impossible. Thomas Frank is experiencing the same thing, where he stated before the New Year that Tottenham are not a Champions League candidate – yet.
Intense work is being done to lift Tottenham up from 14th place in the Premier League table, moves are being made in January to create new momentum. A strong signing of Atletico Madrid player Conor Gallagher was landed this week, and Tottenham have also made an important move on the coaching side.
John Heitinga was part of the coaching staff of Arne Slot, who led Liverpool to the Premier League title last season. When Slot was out with quarantine in the game against Newcastle, Heitinga stood on the sidelines as Liverpool’s head coach to a 2-0 victory. Now the Dutchman is in charge of the defensive work at the Tottenham training ground.
Another important move that will create peace of mind for Thomas Frank is that the sporting director who did not want Frank in the coaching job, must leave the club himself. Fabio Paratici, who returned in October 2025 after serving a suspension for accounting fraud at Juventus, is already on his way out of the club. According to The Athletic, the Italian did not want Thomas Frank as Spurs coach, now he has been told to find a new job. This must be seen as a vote of confidence from the club management to Frank.
Although Tottenham supporters will have to scroll down to the relegation zone of the Premier League table to find their club, the points gap tells a story that things can change quickly. This season, several new clubs have signed up to the top flight, while Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea are taking more points than expected. After 21 games, with 17 remaining in the season, Tottenham have no further up from their 14th place to 5th place than six poor points.
Another solid reinforcement is brought in from Brazil. One of Santos’ new stars, 19-year-old Souza, is ready for Tottenham. The English media have for several weeks highlighted the left-back as one of Tottenham’s main targets in the winter transfer window.
No reason to write Tottenham off a strong finish to the 2025/26 season.
