How to drink whiskey in the best way: What is the difference between Irish and Scotch? Mixed or single malt? With or without water?

1. What is whiskey?

Whiskey is a golden-colored liquor made from three ingredients: grain, water, and yeast. Malted barley is the most common grain used, but some Irish whiskeys (such as Single Pot Still) use a blend of malted and unmalted barley. Scotch and Japanese whiskey uses only malted barley. Rye whiskey is made from rye, and bourbon must contain at least 51% corn. In the past, oats and other types of wheat were also used.

2. What is measured?

Smelting is a process in which barley is soaked in water, dried and ground. The flour, which contains sugar, is then fermented into a wort that is distilled.

3. What is single malt?

A single malt is whiskey produced exclusively at one distillery.

4. What is single pot still whiskey?

Single pot still whiskey is made from a blend of malted and unmalted barley, all distilled at one distillery.

5. What is blended whiskey?

A blended whisky can be a blend of whisky from several distilleries, different types of whisky or whisky with different ageing times. These are usually the most affordable, but not always – it depends on the quality of the whiskey used in the blend.

6. What is the difference between Scotch and Irish whiskey?

The names are spelled slightly differently (whisky in Scotland and whiskey in Ireland), but they are very similar. Scotch whiskey must be distilled and aged in Scotland, while Irish whiskey must be distilled and matured in Ireland. It is often said that Irish whiskey is softer because it is triple-distilled, while Scotch is only double-distilled – but some types of Scotch whiskey are also triple-distilled. Many people think that Scotch whiskey is smoked (peaty), while Irish is not, but some Irish whiskeys can also have smoky flavors, and not all Scotch ones have the characteristic smoky aroma.

7. Are there other whiskeys?

Yes, bourbon is an American whiskey. Canada also produces whiskey, and Japan makes outstanding whiskey. Many other countries are also trying.

8. Can I add water or ice to my whiskey?

Yes, you can. Some whiskeys, such as cask strength, can have over 50% alcohol (versus the standard 40%) and are difficult to drink pure. A few drops of water can actually accentuate the aromas and flavors. Standard whiskey is already diluted slightly before bottling to lower the strength from cask strength.

9. Can I make cocktails with whiskey?

There are many whiskey cocktails, with Old Fashioned and Manhattan being the most popular.

10. Is whiskey gluten-free?

yes. Gluten is removed during the distillation process.
