Reacher Season 4 will make all previous seasons seem tame

While every season of “Reacher” has its brutal moments, the source book for Season 4 means that many fans of the Prime Video action thriller won’t be prepared for how dark the series is going to be.

It can be difficult to determine how dark, intense or brutal an action thriller really is. Many action movies offer moments of overwhelming blood – such as “Novocaine” from 2025 or “Crank” from 2006. But their wild and goofy tone ensures that these moments play out as cartoonish, ironically nasty jokes.

In contrast, action thrillers like Prime Video’s spy hit “The Terminal List” may not have as much gruesome detail, but the consistently down-to-earth atmosphere and paranoid plots make the whole experience far darker and more self-deprecating.

Some viewers are shocked by moments of bloody evil on screen, while others are more marked by subtle psychological implications and don’t find the blood and guts particularly terrible. That said, almost everyone can agree that Prime Video’s biggest action thriller has its ugly moments.

Compared to the five-season masterpiece “The Boys”, “Reacher” is practically suitable for children. Still, the series is an R-rated, mature action thriller by any reasonable standard. As an adaptation of author Lee Child’s novel series of the same name, “Reacher” does the original material justice by never shying away from the darker side of Child’s books. The previous Jack Reacher movies starring Tom Cruise cleaned up the events in the books to ensure a PG-13 rating, but Prime Video’s “Reacher” has no such qualms.

Reacher Season 4’s Conspiracy Is Much Bigger Than In Previous Seasons

Whether he’s slowly drowning a henchman in a pool or slitting open a villain’s neck with a surgical saw in Season 2, Reacher’s penchant for inventive and deadly violence isn’t something the series avoids.

That said, the upcoming “Reacher” season 4 will still be a big leap in terms of the series’ relatively tame storytelling up until now. Previously, seasons 1–3 have focused on Reacher taking down relatively small-scale criminal conspiracies – from corrupt police officers in season 1 to the arms smugglers in season 3.

Reacher Season 2 Bad luck and trouble
Reacher Season 3 Persuading
Reacher Season 4 Gone tomorrow

In contrast, “Reacher” season 4 is based on the 2009 novel “Gone Tomorrow,” which takes place in New York City. The fact that this season’s story takes place in one of the world’s largest cities should warn viewers that the criminal conspiracy will be much bigger and more extensive than the events of previous seasons – but that’s not all.

“Gone Tomorrow’s” story focuses on Reacher’s attempt to uncover the truth behind a seemingly senseless tragedy, after a woman takes her own life in front of him in the opening scene. The book begins with Reacher fearing that he has spotted a potential bomber on the subway. But when he approaches the woman to question her, the distraught character turns a gun on himself before he can stop her.

While Prime Video’s book adaptation has had some grim scenes in the past, this shocking jolt of violence in the story’s very first scene proves that this story is not for the faint of heart – even compared to Reacher’s previous bloody outings.

Reacher Season 4 Will Include The Show’s Darkest Scene Yet

As if this wasn’t enough, the story in “Reacher” season 4’s source material only gets darker from there. Without divulging too many details, the source novel contains a scene that remains the most disturbing moment in any of Child’s books. The villain sends Reacher a DVD of men being tortured and killed to deter him from further investigation.

This plot point is so deeply sinister that the same coded warning is found in the later Ridley Scott film “The Counselor”, where its use is equally disturbing.

The premise of snuff movies is disturbing enough, but the use of such a movie to scare the protagonist from investigating a mystery further is a deeply eerie mind game that feels more appropriate for “Mr. Mercedes” or “Silence of the Lambs” than a Reacher novel. This, combined with the sheer size of the conspiracy Reacher threatens to expose in “Gone Tomorrow,” makes the plot feel doubly gloomy.

Reacher is the best action series in decades – and it’s obvious why

If Reacher was looking for a lone maniac who killed victims and filmed their deaths, this would be disturbing, but still fit into the usual formula of a serial killer thriller. If he were to uncover an extensive conspiracy involving corrupt politicians, Russian oligarchs and terrorists, this would be a gripping but tolerably paranoid conspiracy thriller in the style of “Three Days of Condor” or “The Parallax View”.

Instead, “Gone Tomorrow’s” plot mixes a “Se7en”-esque serial killer thriller with a paranoid conspiracy thriller where no one can be trusted – creating a uniquely bleak experience for Child’s anti-hero. Reacher seems to face impossible odds in every book, but this is one of the few times he truly becomes hopeless in the face of a villain who has seemingly infiltrated all levels of power.

Reacher season 4 opens with Jack Reacher actually failing

The best summary of “Gone Tomorrow’s” unique appeal as a darker Reacher story comes in the aforementioned opening scene, where Reacher is unable to save a poor woman from taking her own life. It’s a shocking moment that clashes with the character’s established persona.

After all, Reacher’s almost superhuman perseverance and fearlessness usually make him a reliable hero for those in need. This disturbing start shocks the reader as much as the hero, so it’s not surprising when Reacher is haunted by death throughout the book.

Similarly, his inability to save the men who are tortured and killed in the video he watches later makes Reacher more helpless than viewers have ever seen him in the Prime Video action thriller so far.

Of course, all of this makes the ending of the story more engaging, as Reacher mobilizes his considerable skills and finally sets in motion the work of taking down the biggest criminal enterprise he’s encountered to date.

But before that, it will be interesting to see how fans of the series react to the events of the early episodes. If the series stays as true to the books as previous seasons, the events of the early episodes of “Reacher” season 4 will be a refreshing, brutal reality check for a hero who seemed completely unstoppable up until this point.
