The head of Poland’s Olympic Committee, Radosław Piesiewicz, has been arrested in an extensive corruption case with links to cryptocurrency, organized crime and Russian intelligence. The sports minister confirms the arrest and uses strong words about his own Olympic leader.
Piesiewicz is suspected of having received bribes in connection with the award of sponsorship contracts to the crypto company Zondacrypto – a company the Polish government accuses of having ties to:
- Nationalist opposition groups
- Organized crime
- Russian intelligence
“Radosław Piesiewicz has been arrested,” Poland’s Sports Minister Jakub Rudnicki confirmed in a post on social media.
Rudnicki did not hide his view on the matter:
“Such a person should never have been president of the Polish Olympic Committee. Piesiewicz has disgraced Polish Olympic sports.
Demanded resignation – now he has been arrested
Polish authorities began an investigation in April. Shortly after, a majority of Poland’s sports federation demanded that Piesiewicz resign.
The federations claimed that Piesiewicz had personally signed a sponsorship deal with Zondacrypto on behalf of the Polish Olympic Committee (PKOl). According to the agreement, Olympic medalists from the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina in February would be rewarded in the form of cryptocurrency – an arrangement that has now had serious legal consequences.
The arrest is a rare and dramatic step towards a top sports leader in Poland – and raises major questions about impartiality, financial interests and safety in the sport’s top teams.
