May the Farce be With You

Film legend Mel Brooks has announced that a sequel to the cult classic Spaceballs, a parody of Star Wars, is coming in 2027.

Brooks posted a video on YouTube in which he listed all the film series that have had countless sequels since the original Spaceballs came out in 1987, before announcing the new project.

“After 40 years, we asked what the fans wanted,” Brooks said. “But instead, we’re making this movie.”

Spaceballs 2 is set to arrive in 2027 – in theaters – which means it will release exactly 40 years after the first film.

Members of the original cast are set to return, including Rick Moranis, who officially retired from acting in the 1990s, and Bill Pullman. Mel Brooks will also be in the sequel, despite being just days away from his 99th birthday as of this writing. A true comedy legend.

The film is described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

Spaceballs 2 is directed by Josh Greenbaum, who previously directed Strays and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. The screenplay is written by Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez – known for their work on Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, The Tick and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem – along with Josh Gad. Yep, the same Josh Gad who played Olaf in Frozen.

Fortunately, there has been no talk of John Candy being resurrected in AI form for this sequel.

Spaceballs 2 is also not alone in reviving the once-prolific film genre that parodies popular culture.

Scary Movie 6 is set to hit theaters on June 12, 2026, with series creator Keenen Ivory Wayans still at the helm.

Is there anything in the water? As the Spaceballs teaser playfully emphasizes, popular culture is certainly ripe for parodies at present, with boss-controlled cynicism seeping out of every pore in the weakened Marvel and Star Wars franchises, and revived remakes draining a bit of the life out of the movie world.

And that’s before we even get to how the power of streaming services has affected things.

The sequel to Spaceballs is scheduled to launch in 2027, and by then Mel Brooks will be well over 100 years old. The film is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios, suggesting that it will eventually become a Prime Video movie. There you can currently see the original Spaceballs.
