The image of a crying and disconsolate German goalkeeper, who was hugged by a disappointed Jürgen Klopp, does not disappear from the retina. Loris Karius was responsible for two of the biggest goalkeeping blunders in Champions League final history, a match that has marked the goalkeeper since 2018. Almost six years later, things have finally turned around!
If you mention the name Loris Karius to Liverpool supporters, a response comes characterized by “mixed emotions”. The German established himself in the 2017/18 season as Liverpool’s first goalkeeper and delivered a number of impressive performances for the Reds. However, it is the Champions League final against Real Madrid in 2018 and two massive goalkeeping blunders Karius is remembered for at Anfield. The road back to European top football has been a very demanding journey for Karius, but at the age of 33, the German goalkeeper has finally gotten his revenge.
In 2025, Karius Schalke signed 04, quickly becoming the first goalkeeper and crucial for the club to be promoted back to the Bundesliga.
Schalke didn’t have the best start to their return to the Bundesliga, with a tough 3-0 loss to Augsburg. Despite the loss, Karius impressed with 10 saves in the game. He was again in the starting eleven for Schalke’s match against Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich at the Arena AufSchalke on Saturday night.
And guess what, Lorius became the first goalkeeper in Bayern Munich’s last 60 games to refuse to concede a goal!
Schalke managed to get out of the game with one point, as the game ended goalless. Karius was once again brilliant and had five saves for his team. He had a fine save that prevented Nathaniel Brown in the first half, while he made another fantastic save with four minutes left to prevent Harry Kane from securing the victory for the away team.
It was the first game in 60 games that Bayern had not scored. Karius was of course awarded the “Player of the Match” award.
The previously so unfortunate Liverpool goalkeeper has really deserved this.
