In January, it was announced that Ryan Hurst, who played Tor in the God of War games, would take on the role of Kratos for the adaptation.

Now, several actors have been confirmed for the series. Severance star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will play the god of thunder Thor, “a mountain of a man who has survived many battles in his time, but whose actions in a war fought long ago now haunt his waking hours.”

“Once Asgard’s loyal soldier and his father’s right-hand man, Thor is now just a shadow of his former self, drowning himself in alcohol and trying not to think about the price he paid. Keeping his wife and children at a distance has only reinforced his isolation, but the power (and father) of the god of thunder is still there just below the surface,” the official character description reads.

According to Deadline, Teresa Palmer will play Tor’s wife, Sif, and Max Parker will take on the role of Heimdall. Mandy Patinkin will play Odin. “The All-Father is not physically imposing or particularly godlike: but appearances can be deceiving. He is the most powerful Aesir god, a patriarch who leads with an iron fist, and an unsurpassed seeker of knowledge. When it comes to searching for prophecy, Odin is paranoid, manipulative and dangerous – he will do anything to try to prevent Ragnarok, the Norse apocalypse. He serves as a formidable antagonist to Kratos,” Amazon Prime said in a press release.

Ed Skrein will play the main antagonist Baldur. “He may be Odin’s youngest son, but he is his father’s most dangerous weapon,” reads an official description. “Charismatic, unpredictable and equipped with a sharp tongue, Baldur lives by his own rules. As a boy, Baldur was cursed; This curse denied him the ability to feel joy and physical sensation. This feeds an insatiable anger and bloodlust in Baldur, who prefers a fighting style that blends his immense power with the raw strength of his fists. Above all, he longs for an opponent who can truly match his skill in combat. An opponent who can finally make him feel something.”

The series, which will draw a lot of inspiration from the more recent games God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarök, will follow “father and son, Kratos, and ten-year-old Atreus, as they embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of his wife and mother, Faye. Through his adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better person.”

Prime Video has already ordered two seasons of God of War, with Ronald D. Moore as showrunner. There is currently no release date for the series, and filming is scheduled to start later this year. Moore has previously angered fans by admitting that he hadn’t actually played the video game series.
