Erling Haaland is once again on the radar of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. According to journalist Matteo Moretto, Manchester City’s 26-year-old Norwegian striker envisions a future in Spanish football – although neither the club nor the time has been decided.

The information comes at a time when Manchester City are facing the consequences of the lawsuits over financial violations in the Premier League. Haaland has a contract until June 2034, which makes a transfer difficult for the two Spanish big clubs.

Dreaming of LaLiga
Moretto revealed in the MARCA program “Los 100” that Haaland sees the Spanish championship as the next step in his career. The journalist explained that the Norwegian usually chooses destinations based on sporting criteria.

Haaland joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022 and won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in his first season. That season ended with 52 goals in all competitions – 36 of them in the English league.

Now, the Spain opportunity is reappearing in his plans. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona are real options, but Moretto did not point out which of the two clubs might be stronger. In other words, Haaland is warming up for the Clásico – in the long run.

The contract is the main problem
Haaland renewed in January 2025 – until 2034. According to Sky Sports, the long-term deal removed the previous buyout clauses, making the road to Spain significantly more complicated.

City’s situation could change everything
Manchester City’s institutional situation creates uncertainty about Haaland’s future. On September 29, 2026, the Premier League reported that an independent commission had found several financial transgressions proven.

The club appealed the decision, and the final decision on possible sanctions is still being processed. The penalties include fines, points deductions and other sporting measures.

Should a sanction hit the team’s competitiveness sharply, it could change the plans of several players. For Haaland, a departure will depend on what City demand financially.

Real Madrid and Barcelona – with reservations
Real Madrid and Barcelona appear to be the two possible Spanish destinations. However, Moretto’s statements point to a preference for LaLiga – not a final choice of club.

The interest around Haaland is also contingent on the contract, which is still valid for almost eight years. Any negotiation must resolve both the transfer fee and the player’s salary terms.

The coming months will be marked by City’s disciplinary procedure and possible consequences. The outcome of the appeal – and the impending sanction – could determine whether Haaland continues his career plan in England, or starts looking towards Spain.
