It won’t be long before we get the answer.
After an update on the James Bond casting was shared last week – with a hint of an unknown candidate for the role of 007 among the latest screen tests – fans have begun to speculate who it could be. And there’s one name that keeps popping up.
Sydney Sweeney! From ‘Euphoria’ to country icon: Sydney Sweeney is being considered for Dolly Parton film
After endless rumours about the successor to Daniel Craig, who said goodbye to the Bond role in 2021’s No Time To Die , it finally seems that we are in the final stages of the casting race.
Earlier this month, Deadline reported that Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, and Josh O’Connor – plus a mysterious man – have been offered screen tests by the Bond bosses at Amazon MGM Studios. Amazon took over the spy franchise from longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson as part of a joint venture announced in early 2025.
Joe Alwyn mentioned as a possible candidate
On Reddit, Bond fans have put forward their theories about who the mysterious fourth potential Bond star could be – and Joe Alwyn is mentioned as a possible candidate.
Alwyn, known from Conversations with Friends, The Brutalist and Hamnet, has been a quiet name in the Bond race, but one fan commented: “I’ve never thought of him as a candidate before, but it makes sense.”
Another Reddit user argued that the mysterious actor, whoever it is, has “already” landed the role — and that’s why the identity is being kept secret at this stage.
The reports appear to have left out former Bond favourites, among them Ink star Jack O’Connell, from these latest samples. Other names that have been in the picture include Aaron Pierre, Richard Madden, Harris Dickinson, James Norton, Theo James, Idris Elba and Sunset Boulevard stage star Tom Francis.

Announcement may come before the end of the year
Last summer, producer Amy Pascal said that an announcement could come before the end of the year. Amazon previously said in a statement: “The search for the next James Bond is ongoing. While we do not plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we look forward to sharing more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”
The new Bond film will be directed by Dune director Denis Villeneuve and written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
