Elon Musk’s XAI data centers sued again

Neighbors can’t sleep, flee or escape “jet engine sound”

The frightening thing right now is that antisocial multi-billionaires have such a firm grip on governments and the media that they are steering the globe towards a world on fire.

One example is the emergence of data centers that suck up energy to such an extent that it affects everyone else. – You will pay more for your electricity because of it, while at the same time data centers are built sufficiently to process more than 10,000 times today’s needs.

One who is at the forefront of the construction is Elon Musk, who has just swindled new billions and become the world’s first dollar trillion by pumping up the value of Space X for an IPO. – An IPO that circumvented the rules on a one-year waiting period to get into index funds.

(A piece of advice for those who have bought, sell out before the hype is over and reality comes to light)

Elon Musk’s XAI data centers have become such a massive and growing nuisance that they are now facing another lawsuit. This time, the neighbors are demanding both an end to the constant noise and huge amounts of compensation.

Previously, we have reported that Musk is being sued for the environmental damage caused by the data centers, and for communities getting sick. But the noise itself is a huge problem – and that is exactly what this new lawsuit is about.

Here is an excerpt from the complaint:

“The presence of this noise is pervasive and inevitable, especially at night when other sounds indoors and outdoors become silent. Residents have to put up with this noise at all hours of the day and night and have described it as sounding like a jet engine.”

This has developed into a major burden on communities across America.

From three turbines to 57 in less than a year

If you’re lucky enough not to live near one of these facilities, you might think, “How high can it really get? This is a data center, after all.”

But the answer is that it’s not the noise from the data center itself that you hear. It’s the sound of it that powers the data center. In practice, these are jet engines.

According to the complaint, the number of gas turbines at the South Haven plant has increased from three to 18, then to 27, and now to 57 turbines – in less than a year.

The complaint describes the sound from the system as a combination of high-frequency beeping, continuous engine roar, low-frequency rumble and a toned hum or whining.

Almost 100 engines running around the clock

Currently, the plant has 57 turbines, but they have been given permission to build 41 more. Then they will have just under 100 huge, jet engine-like machines running 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Imagine that you live in a house that you have lived in for a year, ten years, or your entire life – your childhood home. And then suddenly you have 30 planes standing and running constantly right next to you.

You can never escape the sound, either day or night. It has ruined your ability to sleep, to entertain guests, and made everyday life impossible for your children.

What would you do in such a situation?

The lawsuit claims compensation for mental strain

I don’t want to call for any radical action – even though this almost sounds like the opening chapter of a modern story about farmers grabbing pitchforks and torches. Hopefully, the lawsuit can prevent more extreme measures.

The lawsuit requires Elon’s company to pay damages for causing mental distress and emotional stress, as well as for preventing people from enjoying their property.

If you’ve ever been annoyed by a neighbor using a gas blower for too long, mowing the lawn too early, or hammering into the wall – then you know how annoying it can be. Now imagine 57 jet engines instead.

More lawsuits against XAI

This is not the only lawsuit XAI is facing. The NAACP is also suing to stop unauthorized air pollution from an illegal power plant – in the exact same location, at the Colossus 2 data center.

At the same time, New Jersey residents have sued a local data center over similar noise complaints.

Remember that this is basically about methane combustion turbines. They are constantly burning and polluting the surrounding area.

The irony: At the same time, you can create non-consensual photos on Grok

On the one hand, XAI is destroying communities with pollution and noise. On the other hand, you can use their service, Grok, to create non-consensual sexual images of people.

That’s kind of the trade-off, I suppose.

Could they at least give the nearby residents a free Grok subscription or something? I doubt they even do.

XAI did not respond to a request for comment

XAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The reason is probably that Elon Musk does not care about ordinary people or the damage he inflicts on them.

The company’s parent company, SpaceX, is also working on sending data centers into orbit. They boast of this as a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to data centers on the ground.

Orbital data centers? A stupid idea

I’m no expert, and I don’t have time to explain thermodynamics in detail. But I can say with great confidence that this is not going to happen.

That’s a massive lie to create hype ahead of SpaceX’s IPO. I can’t stress enough how thermodynamically pointless it is to send data centers into orbit. It’s literally the dumbest place you could put them.

Don’t buy the hype.

Engineer alerted about Grok’s safety – was fired

Before we wrap up, it’s worth remembering that there are many lawsuits against XAI.

An engineer named Devin Kim raised the alarm about the security problems in Grok. He pointed out that Grok could promote discrimination and contribute to spreading misinformation – also on sensitive topics such as weapons of mass destruction.

Kim expressed concern that XAI did not prioritize safety in the development of Grok. He was fired for raising these concerns.

Grok has declared himself the “Mecca of Hitler”

Remember that Grok has since declared himself “Mecca Hitler” and flooded Twitter with non-consensual sexual images of both ordinary people and celebrities. So Devin Kim obviously knew what he was talking about.

Elon Musk doesn’t care about any of this. Neither does the rest of the management. They think that they are going to create a digital Jesus or something like that.

And then the farmer who is injured along the way just suffers.

Another lawsuit: Grok shares your conversations with third parties

There is also a new group of lawsuits against Grok. They claim that Grok shares user data and your entire conversations with third parties without your consent or knowledge. This is about the most serious privacy breach I can imagine.

It’s all pretty bad.

The trade-off: Environmental destruction, noise and privacy violations

On the other side of the table, you have the company’s environmentally damaging technology, which accelerates the replacement of human workers and destroys art. And no one really wants the technologist anyway.

That’s how the trade-offs are, or something like that.
