Since 2013, we’ve seen managers come and go at Old Trafford, all compared to the results of the club’s heyday under Alex Ferguson. Last October, it was Ten Hag who was weighed too lightly, seven months later Manchester United can once again turn to the market for a new coach. The common denominator for all the coaching exits is that it costs the club large sums of money. So far without providing a solution.
Next week, the Manchester United players will take to the pitch in Bilbao for a must-win final in the Europa League against Tottenham. This will save “the worst Premier League season ever” for United with prize money and a Champions League ticket. For Ruben Amorim, however, it cannot be enough to walk out of this evening as EL champion.
Some English media report that victory in the final is a prerequisite for Amorim to keep his job as United coach, others claim that the race is over anyway for the Portuguese and will be sacked after the final. Anyway, for Manchester United it will again be a calculation. What does it cost to keep the manager, compared to the cost of potentially continuing to lose Premier League games.
Last year, Ratcliffe and the United management paid a total of £14.5 million to sack the long-term coaching solution Ten Hag and his team. This included sending sporting director Dan Ashworth out the door after 159 days in the job.
The Daily Mail has calculated what it will cost United to sack Amorim after the Europa League final. According to the English media, Amorim signed a 2.5-year contract in November with an annual salary of £6.5 million. This means, roughly speaking, that Manchester United will have to shell out around £13 million if they are to sack Amorim next week.
This comes just before a transfer window where Manchester United have to sell in order to buy players. Not good.
