Christopher Nolan admits it’s a type of film he’s afraid to make

Sir Christopher Nolan has revealed which film genres he is too “scared” to try his hand at. The director behind “The Odyssey” has previously embarked on everything from superhero movies and sci-fi adventures to large-scale dramas, but he has stayed far away from one genre – It’s romantic comedies, and the reason is definitely not that he doesn’t like them.

The reason? He is convinced that it would be “incredibly difficult”, and admits that he is simply too scared to attempt comedy, which he describes as “one of the hardest things in the world”.

In an interview with The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon , Nolan explained:

“I think it would be extremely demanding to make a romantic comedy. I love watching movies like that, but people who direct comedy – those who do humor – are doing one of the hardest things there is: making people laugh like that.

He highlights the great risk comedy creators take:

“When I show a film to an audience, and they may not respond to certain scenes, I think: ‘Oh, they didn’t get it. That’s okay.” But in comedy, there is no such way back. You can’t explain away the lack of laughter. I would be terrified to do something like that.

Wants to create horror – but is waiting for the right idea

Despite his fear of comedy, Nolan is all the more open to exploring the horror genre. Several bloody scenes in the Odyssey have given him blood on his teeth, but he emphasizes that he will not throw himself into anything until he has a really good idea.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter , he said:

“The scenes in The Odyssey really whet my appetite for more. But I have always believed that horror as a genre must be approached with great caution – conceptually speaking. You have to have an excellent idea. When you watch a movie like Obsession, it’s a great idea. That film works like a shot.

“It’s not about technique. Nor is it about what technical challenges I want to try. It’s about the story. That’s how I always feel,” Nolan emphasizes.

Wants to reunite with Christian Bale

Nolan also revealed that he would like to work with Christian Bale again in the future. The director described Bale, with whom he collaborated on the Batman trilogy and The Prestige, as “one of the great actors of his generation.”

“I’ve had fantastic experiences with him, and I’m very happy that The Prestige will soon be reissued. It’s one of his most underrated achievements, and I can’t wait to present it to a new audience,” Nolan said.
