Cristian Volpato reportedly tested positive for cocaine on the same night he was twice stopped for speeding in Sydney.
The 22-year-old, who played three games for Australia at the World Cup, was one of the team’s big breakthroughs – having switched national teams from Italy just before the tournament.

Now, police in New South Wales report that Volpato was allegedly measured at 109 km/h – a full 50 km/h over the speed limit – when he was stopped on Anzac Bridge in Sydney around 1 a.m. on Friday night.
Drove too fast twice the same night
Volpato was subjected to a rapid test at the scene, which gave a positive result for cocaine, police said in a statement. A new sample will now be analyzed, while the driver’s license has been revoked for six months.
The police also state that Volpato had already been stopped two hours earlier – around 11 p.m. on Thursday evening – and then received a fine for driving more than 20 km/h across the border. At that time, he was breathalyzed, but the result was negative.
Volpato, who plays for Italian Sassuolo, was born in Sydney, but represented Italy at U20 level after joining Roma in 2020. Now, the young star’s future both on and off the pitch can be seen in a whole new light.
