New Norwegian upturn in the FIFA rankings – Only Denmark, in 20th place, is above us of the Nordic countries.

Norway’s men’s national football team continues its positive development and has climbed two new places in the latest FIFA ranking. For Sweden, on the other hand, the ranking reflects a very gloomy period.

On the list published on Thursday, Norway moved up to 29th place. This is the team’s best finish since August 2013 and comes on the back of an impressive run of nine wins and one draw in the last ten meetings.

From “Drillo” top to bottom position
Norway’s national football team has had an extraordinary journey on the ranking list. In the 1990s, under the leadership of Egil “Drillo” Olsen, the team was as high as in second place. In July 2017, however, it reached its lowest position ever, at a bottom-dark 88th place.

The current trend is clearly positive, and Ståle Solbakken’s team is riding a wave of confidence ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Estonia at home at Ullevaal and away against Italy at San Siro.

Sweden’s nightmare While
Norway is celebrating, the situation is the opposite for neighboring Sweden. After a disappointing World Cup qualifier that included a loss to Kosovo, the Swedish team has plunged eight places in the rankings – the biggest drop in the world this month. Sweden is now down to 40th place.

Top and bottom worldwide
At the top of the rankings is Spain, led by a new “golden generation”. Reigning world champion Argentina has reclaimed second place, while Germany has once again worked their way into the top ten.

Among those celebrating the greatest progress is the Faroe Islands, which with a jump of nine places to 127th place share that honor with countries such as Lesotho and Niger.
