John Lithgow as Dumbledore and Nick Frost as Gygrid among the big names
HBO has revealed an impressive cast for the upcoming Harry Potter series, which will give J.K. Rowling’s magical book universe a whole new interpretation of television. Among the big names are Oscar-nominated actors, theatre legends and famous British stars who will bring some of the world’s most iconic wizards and goblins to life.

- John Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun, The Crown) as Albus Dumbledore
- Janet McTeer (Ozark, Albert Nobbs) as Minerva McSnurp
- Paapa Essiedu (The Lazarus Project, I May Destroy You) as Severus Slur
- Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) as Rubeus Gygrid
In addition, HBO has announced two other important supporting roles:
- Luke Thallon (The Great) as Quirinus Krengle
- Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show, Mortimer & Whitehouse) as Argus Nask

The series, which is based on Rowling’s original book series, promises to be a faithful adaptation of the story – but with a completely new cast. This means that a new generation of fans can experience Harry’s journey from the start, while the classic films remain available on Max.
When is the series coming out?
It has not yet been revealed when the series will premiere, but production is in full swing with a star-studded crew behind the camera:
- J.K. Rowling is executive producer
- David Heyman (the original films) is also involved as a producer
- Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials) is responsible for the script
