The sequel to the classic has finally been given the green light

“Heat 2” becomes a reality.

Warner Bros. has finally given the go-ahead for Michael Mann’s “Heat 2”, reports World of Reel.

The website cites “sources” who claim that the studio is “extremely enthusiastic” about embarking on the sequel to one of the most acclaimed crime thrillers of all time.

Already in March, it became known that Michael Mann had completed the script for the film, which in turn is based on a novel he wrote together with crime writer Meg Gardiner. The book was published in 2022.

Continuation and precursor in one

The story serves as both a sequel and a prequel to the original “Heat,” with action jumping between time periods before the events of the film (1988) and after. It is a wide-ranging story, but it received positive reviews after its publication.

Who will replace an iconic cast?

The original 1995 “Heat” movie starred Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, which raises the big question: Who will fill these giant shoes in “Heat 2”?

Deadline reported as early as 2023 that Adam Driver was in talks to take over De Niro’s role as Neil McCauley. Driver has previously worked with Michael Mann in “Ferrari”, Mann’s latest feature film. Although that film gained attention for its questionable accents (including Drivers), Mann stated that “Adam and I clicked immediately” when discussing the possibility of Driver appearing in “Heat 2”.

Austin Butler has also been heavily linked to the role of Chris Shiherlis, who was played by Val Kilmer. Rumors about who might play Al Pacino’s role as Vincent Hanna in the earlier time period, however, are more unclear.

Ambitious schedule

World of Reel claims that Mann plans to shoot “Heat 2” this year, with the goal of having it released before the end of 2026. But he must act quickly to meet this deadline.

Mann is currently 82 years old, while “Heat” celebrates its 30th anniversary later this year. The film premiered in U.S. theaters on December 15, 1995.
