From Wednesday 20 August this year, NRK’s legendary Teletext service will come to an end. The decision to shut down was announced as early as June, with the assurance that all information previously available via teletext will continue to be available on nrk.no.

Teletext wrote Norwegian media history when it was launched in 1983. During its 42 years in operation, the service has been an important source of news, sports, weather and social information for millions of Norwegians. The service was particularly appreciated during important societal events, and it served as a critical information channel for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The closure marks the end of an era in Norwegian media history, but also of a technological chapter when teletext pioneered interactivity before the age of the internet. The development of technology and the increase in digital media consumption have gradually made the service redundant.

NRK emphasizes that all functions and content from Teletext will be available on nrk.no and in NRK’s other digital channels, so that users will continue to have access to the same essential information.
