The downward spiral that Manchester United is in is quite spectacular. – The club, which was once the world’s biggest and best, has only collected 7 points in the first 7 games of this year’s Premier League season. In comparison, the light blue part of Manchester has a full pot with 21 points.

Michael Carrick was his own players after Manchester United were crushed 4-1 by Como in the Champions League – and at the same time responded to Bruno Fernandes’ criticism of the tactics.

Manchester United pave the way for top signing

Michael Carrick questioned the efforts of his Manchester United players after watching them slump to a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League.

The head coach also responded to criticism of his tactics from Bruno Fernandes, suggesting that the defeat was due to the players not running hard enough – not how he put them out to press.

At an extraordinary press conference after the Champions League humiliation in Como, Carrick appeared angry as he once again apologised for his performance, saying he “didn’t like” what he saw from his players.

United were trailing 0-1 at half-time, with Carrick making a double substitution – but it didn’t help as the team collapsed after half-time, with Joshua Zirkzee scoring a late consolation goal.

Carrick approached the away fans to apologise after the game, before turning his attention to his own team.

“We can win, we can lose, but the way we did it tonight – I don’t want to say everyone, but the way we did it tonight was in some ways not acceptable. And I just wanted to let the fans know that I feel for them, for sure,” he said.

“It wasn’t just the goals, to be honest. It was the way and the way we played at times, the way we went about it, that was the hard thing to see for me.

Fernandes questioned the way Carrick and his staff set up the team in a post-match TV interview. Carrick was not in the mood to swallow the criticism and responded with his own opinions on why the team had not performed.

“We actually pushed halfway man to man in the second half and conceded a goal from there,” Carrick said.

“And it’s a bit about what system you play, what tactics you use – if you don’t run, don’t run forward and don’t run back, you’re not going to win.

After questioning their level of effort, Carrick was asked if the players were still playing for him.

“It’s not about playing for me, it’s about playing for this football club,” he said.

“It’s the responsibility that comes with being in the position; I’m responsible for the football club and the supporters. I give my best, absolute best all the time, I care about it. My whole life is tied around that. I really give everything I can.

Asked if his players did the same, Carrick said:

“I like to think so. I didn’t like what I saw tonight.
