“Top Gun 3” is officially on its way – Tom Cruise ready for a new flight

Tom Cruise is getting the cockpit ready again. During Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, it was confirmed that “Top Gun 3” is in development – with Cruise himself back in the driver’s seat, along with producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

As early as 2024, it was announced that a sequel to director Joseph Kosinski’s 2022 blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” was underway, with screenwriter Ehren Kruger Kruger co-writing “Maverick” with Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie.

“Top Gun: Maverick” was a huge blockbuster success – at a time when many cinemas were still closed during the corona pandemic. The film grossed a staggering $1.5 billion globally, with a budget of only $170 million. In other words, it gave the cinema industry just the boost it needed in an exceptionally tough period.

Cruise returned for “Maverick” a full 36 years after he first made his debut as the fabled fighter pilot in the original 1986 film. His character, Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, returned to the legendary flight school to train a new generation of pilots on how to complete a deadly mission. Along the way, he crossed paths again with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw – played by Miles Teller – who is the son of his best friend Pete “Goose” Bradshaw, who died in the first film. Together they complete the mission and return home unscathed.

Cruise and Teller were joined by an ensemble of up-and-coming stars in “Maverick”: Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis and Manny Jacinto all played new pilots. In other roles, we found Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Charles Parnell, Ed Harris and Bashir Salahuddin. The film was also the last for Cruise’s original “Top Gun” co-star Val Kilmer, who played the iconic Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. Unfortunately, Kilmer passed away in 2025.
