The Sagrada Familia is now the world’s tallest church

When a new part of the spire was put in place on Thursday, the iconic church in Barcelona passed a historic milestone. With a height of 138 meters, it has taken over the title of the world’s tallest church.

Thus, the Sagrada Familia is about one meter higher than the previous record holder, the Ulm Cathedral in Germany, which measures 161.53 meters. In comparison, Nidaros Cathedral’s tallest tower is 87 meters, according to the Great Norwegian Encyclopedia.

The church is the work of the architect Antoni Gaudí, who died almost 100 years ago. Construction began in 1882, and work has continued uninterrupted ever since. After more than 140 years, it is estimated that the church could finally be completed in about ten years.
