Nicolas Cage could become the main star of the fifth season of True Detective and take over from Jodie Foster – who was the lead actress in season four.

Cage, who recently starred in the disappointing film “Gunslingers,” is in talks with HBO to take on the role, according to Variety.

We can already picture it, and it’s an image we like.

True Detective is a series that takes its time. The first season launched in 2014, and although the previous one aired as early as early 2024, we don’t expect to see True Detective season 5 until 2027.

A report from earlier this year suggested that HBO plans to begin filming in 2026, before a release the following year.

What else do we know about the fifth season? In February 2025, Deadline reported that the plot of the series will be set in Jamaica Bay in New York. It is a swampy estuary area near John F. Kennedy Airport, south of Manhattan. Undoubtedly, a corpse dumping site will emerge from the darker depths.

If he accepts, Cage is expected to play detective Henry Logan, as one of three main characters in the series. He will follow in the footsteps of Season 3’s Mahershala Ali, Season 2’s Colin Farrell, and Matthew McConaughey from the brilliant first season.

This will be the second season of True Detective led by Issa López, who was responsible for season four, “Night Country.”

“We have a small screenwriting team working on Issa. She’s excited,” HBO’s head of drama Francesca Orsi told Deadline in February. “We’ve just given notes on the first two episodes and the whole season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to happen. It’s all about casting and preparation.”

Orsi hinted that while the new season will have ties to 2024’s True Detective: Night Country, as always, it will feature brand new characters and represent a standalone story.

If you can’t wait until 2027 for a dose of Cage, you can find some of his more recent works on streaming services.

“Arcadian” is available to stream on NOW, “Longlegs” is available on Prime Video, and you can watch “The Retirement Plan” on Paramount Plus.
