The Norwegian striker does not want to spend another season on the bench, and the Colchoneros are willing to sell him.

Alexander Sørloth has formally asked Atlético Madrid to let him leave the club in the summer transfer window. This surprising news could have major consequences for Atlético Madrid’s squad.

According to ABC journalist José Ignacio Fernández, the striker expressed his displeasure after the game against Espanyol, where he played just eight minutes after both Antoine Griezmann and Giacomo Raspadori were inserted before him.

The
28-year-old hoped to become a key player for Atlético Madrid after his move from Villarreal in 2024, where he had a dream season with 23 goals in LaLiga. Under Diego Simeone, however, he has failed to establish himself in the starting line-up.

The Norwegian striker feels that the situation will not change this season, and has informed the club that he will not accept another season as a substitute. Fernández has stated that the player was “extremely angry” in the dressing room.

Atlético sets conditions for departure
The red-and-white board does not reject a transfer, but has set a clear demand: 35 million euros. Only when an offer reaches this sum will they consider letting Sørloth leave.

The Metropolitano management also does not want to make it easier for him to leave until they have found a replacement. Among the candidates is Dusan Vlahovic, a Juventus striker who is seeking more playing time outside of Turin and who could come on loan.

Battle for playing time
Former Villarreal player believes he deserves a more prominent role. Last season, he recorded 24 goals and two assists in 53 official games – stats that confirm his ability to score at the top level.

“I feel ready to start for a top club,” he is said to have said to those closest to him, underscoring his ambition to regain a central role elsewhere.

Uncertain future The
Sørloth case adds to the uncertainty surrounding Atlético Madrid’s attack, with only Griezmann remaining a permanent asset. Raspadori’s arrival has changed the offensive hierarchy and further complicated the Norwegian’s situation.

The striker’s future depends on the agent’s ability to find a buyer willing to meet Atlético’s price demands. No formal bids have been made yet, but there is speculation of interest from both the Premier League and Serie A.

A possible departure would represent a dilemma for Atlético. On the one hand, they will free up salary funds and be able to bring in a player who is better suited to Simeone’s system. On the other hand, they risk losing a proven goalscorer in a time of intense competition.

If a deal is made, Sørloth will leave the club with a clear message: Ambition trumps patience. For Atlético Madrid, the priority will be to find a reliable replacement who can not only fill Sørloth’s goal-scoring boots, but also deliver the quality he himself failed to consistently provide.
