The classic song from 1971 plays a central role in the recently released trailer for Netflix’s adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ beloved novel, giving audiences their first glimpse of Gerwig’s vision for the magical world of Narnia. The song is the special remix for the trailer, where the timeless rock sound merges with the film’s epic fantasy atmosphere.
Jimmy Page explains the decision
Led Zeppelin has long been known to carefully protect their music and rarely allow their most famous songs to be used in film and television projects. That makes the inclusion of “Stairway to Heaven” in Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew particularly noteworthy.
Guitarist Jimmy Page revealed that Greta Gerwig’s creative vision played a crucial role in convincing the band to authorize the use of the song.
“I had the privilege of meeting Greta Gerwig, a powerhouse in the film world,” Page said. He praised the director’s previous work, including Lady Bird, Little Women and Barbie, and expressed excitement to see “Stairway to Heaven” used in her upcoming Narnia adaptation.
Greta Gerwig made personal contact
According to reports, Gerwig personally contacted Jimmy Page and Robert Plant to ask for permission to use the legendary song. The filmmaker reportedly shared an early version of the film with the musicians in hopes of securing their support.
Gerwig explained that the song fits perfectly with the themes of the film.
“It’s an epic song, and narratively it’s about a spiritual journey, a path of false idols and wrong paths you can go down. It made sense to introduce the world,” she said.
The director also admitted that she was deeply moved when the band said yes to the request.
“They saw the heart and story of the film,” Gerwig added.
Music at the heart of Narnia
The choice of “Stairway to Heaven” feels particularly appropriate given the music’s importance in Lewis’ story. In The Magician’s Nephew , Aslan creates Narnia through song, making music a fundamental element of the world’s origins.
Gerwig has previously spoken about drawing inspiration from classic rock artists while developing the film, and the inclusion of Led Zeppelin’s most famous song further emphasizes this influence.
A rare exception
Over the years, Led Zeppelin has only allowed a limited number of his songs in major Hollywood productions. The decision to license “Stairway to Heaven” is therefore seen as a significant recognition of Gerwig’s ambitious fantasy project.
The trek has already generated excitement among fans of both the band and the Chronicles of Narnia franchise, bringing even more anticipation to one of the most anticipated fantasy films in years.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is scheduled to premiere worldwide on February 12, 2027, marking the beginning of an all-new cinematic journey into C.S. Lewis’ beloved fantasy world.
