She is the voice that taught us to fly with umbrellas, sang her way into hearts all over the world and captivated generations. Now the legendary Julie Andrews (90) herself is portrayed in a documentary on Disney+.
The streaming service promises an exceptionally close and honest portrait of the Oscar winner – a meeting with the woman behind the icon. Through previously unseen archival material and recent interviews, we get to follow her journey from British vaudeville child to Hollywood’s most beloved voice and one of the biggest names in film history.

From poor childhood to global star
The documentary is directed by renowned filmmaker RJ Cutler, known for portraying everyone from Billie Eilish to Martha Stewart with equal parts nerve and warmth. Now he turns his attention to Julie Andrews – and promises a film that digs deeper than the glitter:
“Julie Andrews is not just a beloved artist. She is a cultural anchor, part of how generations understand joy, resistance and dignity. Most people have no idea what enormous challenges she has overcome,” says Cutler.

Bigger than Mary Poppins – and The Sound of Music

Disney+ goes big – and personally
According to the streaming service, the documentary will provide “an intimate and revealing look at Andrews’ extraordinary journey” – marked by resilience, heartbreak, renewal and a grace that extends far beyond the limelight.
The project is produced by Cutler alongside Trevor Smith, Elise Pearlstein, Jane Cha Cutler and Jonathan Ruane, with Mark Blatty serving as executive producer. Behind the production is Sony Pictures Television’s This Machine.
Premiere in 2027 – and new Princess Diaries golden
The documentary will premiere during 2027, with an official title and date to be announced. The announcement comes at a time when interest in Julie Andrews’ legacy is higher than it has been for a long time – not least because Disney is working on a third Princess Diaries film, in which Anne Hathaway is making a comeback as Mia Thermopolis.
“Julie Andrews is the very definition of timeless,” Disney+ says in the press release. “Her story goes far beyond the film reels. Now the world finally gets to see all of her.
