The Spanish league (La Liga) continues its efforts to move the match in the 17th league round between Villarreal and Barcelona to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Their initiative has caused a lot of controversy in recent weeks, but the process is moving forward and the Spanish Football Federation has already given its approval.

Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, is the architect behind the move and continues to fight back against all opposition. Now he may also clash with UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin, who has now given his opinion on the proposed match in the United States.

In an interview with Politico (reproduced by Diario AS), Čeferin admitted that he is not a fan of playing European matches outside of Europe, while also confirming that there will be dialogue with FIFA on the matter.

“We want to take up this discussion with FIFA and with all the federations, because I don’t think it’s a good thing. It’s okay as an exception, it’s within. If there’s a good reason, that’s fine. But in principle, European teams should play in Europe, because the supporters who cheer them on live in Europe. It’s a great tradition.”

UEFA will make its decision in September
After the Spanish Football Federation gave its approval, the process went on to UEFA. The European Football Association must also give the go-ahead for Villarreal-Barcelona to be played in Miami, otherwise the plans will be shelved.

According to the report, UEFA is expected to make its decision on September 11. If they say yes, the matter will go to FIFA, which will make the final decision. La Liga, Barcelona and Villarreal hope that approval will be given, but for now they will have to wait for the next decision in the ongoing process.
